Splash! I tumbled over the side of the boat and the water closed over my head.
So this was how I was to die. I couldn’t swim. Girls weren’t meant to learn, just to watch and coo at the boys admiringly when they belly-flopped into the lake in the summer. Down, down I sank, choking on the slimy water, bubbles bouncing against my ears. No, I didn’t want to drown. I kicked instinctively and shot up, gasping air as I broke the surface, only to feel the pull down once more…Something yanked at my bodice, hauled me above the water, and set me down, quite gently, on the far side of the lake. Gasping with shock, I turned to look at my rescuer. It was the goose!
